Additional information

Part of the Monnaie de Paris "Les Chefs-d'Œuvre de la Littérature" series, this piece draws on the 12th-century Norman poet Béroul's fragmentary telling of the Tristan legend — distinct from Gottfried von Strassburg's version and notably darker in moral tone. Béroul's manuscript survives in a single incomplete copy held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, making it one of the most studied lacunae in medieval French literature.
