The Phoenicians established Malta — known to them as Maleth, meaning "shelter" or "haven" — as a waystation on western Mediterranean trade routes from roughly the 8th century BC. Their presence on the islands predates Roman occupation by several centuries and left lasting traces in the Maltese language itself, which retains a Semitic grammatical structure unique among European tongues.
This issue belongs to Malta's long-running gold commemorative program documenting the archipelago's successive occupying and colonizing cultures.
