Part of the Austrian Mint's ongoing "New Year's Concert" series, this coin commemorates the Vienna Philharmonic's annual broadcast concert, one of the most-watched classical music events in the world. The 2016 edition carried particular weight — the concert that year was conducted by Mariss Jansons, only the second time he had led it, and the program leaned heavily on Johann Strauss II. The .986 fineness is fractionally higher than standard 24-karat gold, a specification the Austrian Mint has maintained across this series to distinguish it from bullion issues.
