| Additional information |
Malta's gold commemorative program has leaned heavily on Baroque religious art since the mid-2000s, and this 2018 issue draws from the island's extraordinary concentration of Caravaggio works — three of which remain in Valletta's St. John's Co-Cathedral and the Oratory adjacent to it. The specific depiction referenced here comes from a tradition of Counter-Reformation iconography that the Knights of St. John actively promoted as part of Malta's cultural identity after 1565.
KM#197 was struck in limited quantities by the Bavarian State Mint on behalf of the Central Bank of Malta, a long-standing production arrangement.
