France hosted the Rugby World Cup in 2023 for the second time, having previously staged the tournament in 2007. The Monnaie de Paris has issued commemorative coinage for major sporting events on French soil since at least the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and this 5 oz silver piece follows that institutional pattern. South Africa won the tournament, defeating New Zealand in the final at Saint-Denis — the third consecutive World Cup title for the Springboks.
