Issued to commemorate the 30th anniversary of German reunification, this coin frames the Franco-German relationship through the personal axis of Mitterrand and Kohl — the two leaders whose political trust is widely credited with smoothing reunification's path through European diplomacy. Mitterrand's initial hesitation about a unified Germany, rooted in French strategic anxiety, was ultimately overridden by his commitment to deepening European integration, with Kohl offering accelerated monetary union as the implicit bargain.
The Monnaie de Paris produced this as part of its ongoing Europa Star Programme, a multinational series with participating mints across the EU.
