| Obverse description | Central field features the Hellenic Republic coat of arms — a shield bearing a white cross on blue ground, encircled by an olive wreath — superimposed upon a stylised depiction of the Greek national emblem with radiating wing-like elements. Above the central device, a decorative Minoan-inspired double-scroll motif occupies the upper field. The legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ arcs along the upper periphery in Greek characters, while the denomination 50 ΕΥΡΩ is inscribed along the lower rim. The date 2017 appears within the field. |

Part of the Bank of Greece's ongoing "Civilizations" bullion series, this miniature gold piece was issued alongside silver and larger gold denominations treating the same subject. The Minoan palatial period — centered on Knossos and reaching its height around 1700–1450 BC — was brought to modern scholarly attention largely through Arthur Evans's excavations beginning in 1900, work that proved as controversial for its reconstructions as it was celebrated for its discoveries.
