| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a detailed engraving of the three-masted barque Le Pourquoi Pas ?, the famous French polar exploration vessel commanded by Jean-Baptiste Charcot. The ship is shown in full sail on open seas, with a small rowing boat visible to the right in the foreground.
