Obverse description The obverse depicts a detailed engraving of the three-masted barque Le Pourquoi Pas ?, the famous French polar exploration vessel commanded by Jean-Baptiste Charcot. The ship is shown in full sail on open seas, with a small rowing boat visible to the right in the foreground. Behind the vessel, a cartographic polar projection grid with latitude and longitude lines fills the field, evoking the ship's Antarctic expeditions. The monogram 'RF' (République Française) appears to the left of the rigging, while the legend 'POURQUOI PAS ?' arcs along the upper border. A decorative rope motif frames the entire design at the rim.
