Additional information

Spain's transition to euro coinage in 2002 was administratively complex — the peseta had circulated for over 130 years, and the switchover required one of the largest currency recalls in the country's modern history. This 2003 commemorative was issued to mark that first full year of euro circulation, released by the Real Casa de la Moneda, which traces its institutional origins to a royal decree of 1615.

At 168.75 grams and 73 mm across, this is a substantial collector piece, one of the larger silver issues in the Spanish commemorative program of that decade. KM#1093 sees relatively consistent survivor rates in gem condition owing to its commemorative-only distribution.
