Part of Monnaie de Paris's sprawling Olympic commemorative program, this issue was struck three years before the Paris Games opened — an unusually long lead time driven by the mint's decision to release sport-specific gold pieces incrementally rather than flooding the market in a single campaign. Tennis returned to the Olympics as a full medal sport at Seoul in 1988 after a 64-year absence, a reinstatement that remained contentious among purists who viewed it as a professionals' showcase rather than an amateur competition. The Roland-Garros venue, host of Olympic tennis in 2024, sits on the former grounds of the Stade de la Croix-Catelan.
