Issued three years before the Games themselves, this coin is part of the Monnaie de Paris's multi-year Olympic commemorative program that began releasing collector pieces well ahead of Paris 2024 — a deliberate commercial strategy the mint has refined since the London 2012 cycle. The Grand Palais, built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, hosted fencing and taekwondo during the Games, its Beaux-Arts iron-and-glass nave repurposed for the second time as an Olympic venue, having also served French military purposes during both World Wars.
