Additional information

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Bosch's death, this coin appeared in the same year Prado curators were still debating the attribution of several panels long assumed to be workshop copies. The anniversary exhibition in 's-Hertogenbosch and Madrid drew over half a million visitors combined — unusually high numbers that pushed the Royal Mint toward a larger-format commemorative rather than the modest issues originally planned.

Spain's claim on Bosch is largely custodial: Philip II acquired dozens of his works in the 16th century, and the Prado holds the single largest collection of authenticated panels anywhere in the world.
