50 Euros Gaudí - La Sagrada Familia

Issued as part of Spain's early euro-era commemorative program, this piece belongs to a series celebrating UNESCO World Heritage Sites — a political and cultural initiative the Spanish government leaned into heavily during the transitional years following peseta withdrawal. La Sagrada Família was still under active construction in 2002, as it remains today, having been continuously built since 1882 under Gaudí's original plans and subsequent interpretations.

Gaudí himself died in 1926, struck by a Barcelona tram, his pockets so empty that bystanders initially mistook him for a beggar.
