Part of the Monnaie de Paris's ongoing licensed numismatic program with major entertainment franchises, this piece draws on the Tolkien estate and Warner Bros. rights secured for a broader Lord of the Rings collector series. France has no particular institutional connection to Tolkien — he was British, wrote in English, and set his mythology in a fictional northwestern Europe — making this purely a commercial licensing exercise, which the Monnaie de Paris has pursued aggressively since the mid-2010s as mint revenues from circulating coinage declined.
