Additional information

Issued as part of Germany's long-running "Musical Instruments" gold series, this coin commemorates the fortepiano — the predecessor to the modern piano, developed in early 18th-century Florence by Bartolomeo Cristofori. The instrument's defining innovation was dynamic response to touch, which harpsichords could not produce. German craftsmen, particularly in the workshops of Gottfried Silbermann, refined Cristofori's mechanism significantly; J.S. Bach famously criticized early Silbermann fortepianos for their heavy touch before later endorsing an improved version.
