50 Euros Cycladic Civilization

Part of the Bank of Greece's ongoing Europa Star Programme series, this miniature gold issue commemorates the Cycladic civilization that flourished across the Aegean islands from roughly 3200 to 2000 BC. The Cycladic culture left no written record and no deciphered script — what survives is almost entirely material: the distinctive marble figures whose purpose remains genuinely contested among archaeologists, debated as funerary objects, cult idols, or something else entirely.

At one gram, these pieces were never intended for circulation. The Europa Star issues are collector instruments from inception, struck to the exacting .999 fineness standard adopted across participating European central banks for the collaborative programme launched in 2012.
