Jean-Paul Gaultier collaborated with the Monnaie de Paris on a six-coin series issued between 2017 and 2018, each piece colorized to reproduce specific garments and textile patterns drawn directly from his runway archive. "La Poule" — the hen — is Gaultier's longstanding nickname in the French fashion press, a self-deprecating moniker he adopted publicly and which gave this particular coin its title rather than any design motif.

The colorization was applied by hand-painting over the struck silver field, a technique the Monnaie de Paris has refined since the early 2000s but which still results in meaningful variation between individual pieces.
