Issued as part of the Monnaie de Paris' ongoing "Coin of History" series, this piece commemorates the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10th of that year in Paris — at the Palais de Chaillot, making France's role in the document's drafting a point of particular national emphasis. Eleanor Roosevelt chaired the drafting committee; René Cassin, the French jurist who shaped much of the final text, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on it in 1968.
Cassin's draft drew heavily on the 1789 Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen, a lineage the French government has been deliberate about commemorating.
