Part of the Monnaie de Paris' long-running "Coins of History" series, this issue commemorates Bastille Day — the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, the moment that effectively ended Bourbon absolutism in France. The Bastille itself held only seven prisoners when the crowd broke through, a fact the revolutionary press quietly ignored in favor of the symbolism.
