| Beschrijving keerzijde | A finely engraved adaptation of Caravaggio's masterpiece 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' (1608), originally painted for the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of Saint John in Valletta, fills the central field. Several figures are rendered in dramatic chiaroscuro relief: an executioner bends over the prostrate body of the decapitated saint, while a female figure holds a salver and an elderly woman looks on in anguish, with a prison warder observing from the right. The denomination 50 EURO is inscribed to the upper right, and the legend CARAVAGGIO 1571-1610 arcs along the upper border. A beaded inner border encircles the entire composition. |
