Issued to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz, fought on December 2, 1805 — Napoleon's tactical masterstroke in which he deliberately weakened his right flank to lure the Austro-Russian coalition into overextending before crushing their center at the Pratzen Heights. The engagement ended the War of the Third Coalition in a single day and forced Austria out of the conflict entirely, leading directly to the Treaty of Pressburg.
The Monnaie de Paris has issued commemoratives tied to Napoleonic anniversaries with some regularity; the round 7.78g weight corresponds to a quarter-ounce fine gold specification.
