The Auberge de Castille in Valletta served originally as the headquarters of the Castilian, Aragonese, and Portuguese langue of the Knights of St. John, then was remodeled in Baroque style by Grand Master Pinto de Fonseca in the 1740s. After Maltese independence in 1964, the building became — and remains — the office of the Prime Minister. This coin was issued as part of Malta's broader cultural heritage gold series launched in the years immediately surrounding its 2008 accession to the Eurozone.
KM#137 had a strictly limited mintage, typical of Maltese collector gold from this transitional period when the island was simultaneously retiring the Maltese lira and adopting the euro.
