The Auberge d'Italie in Valletta was built in the late 16th century as the headquarters of the Italian langue of the Knights of St. John — one of eight national divisions that administered the Order's affairs on Malta. After the Knights were expelled by Napoleon in 1798, the building passed through successive colonial administrations and eventually became home to Malta's Department of Tourism, a function it still serves.
This issue belongs to Malta's ongoing gold series celebrating the auberges of Valletta, each tied to a specific langue of the Knights Hospitaller.
