| Reverse description | The reverse presents a detailed depiction of the ornate baroque stone cartouche from the façade of the Auberge d'Italie in Valletta, rendered with fine relief against a lightly striated background evoking the building's arched portal. A ring of twelve stars encircles the inner design, consistent with European Union iconography. The legend AUBERGE D'ITALIE arcs along the upper left periphery, the numeral 50 appears at the top of the inner border, and the word EURO is inscribed at the base. |

| Additional information |
The Auberge d'Italie in Valletta was built in the late 16th century as the headquarters of the Italian langue of the Knights of St. John — one of eight national divisions that administered the Order's affairs on Malta. After the Knights were expelled by Napoleon in 1798, the building passed through successive colonial administrations and eventually became home to Malta's Department of Tourism, a function it still serves.
This issue belongs to Malta's ongoing gold series celebrating the auberges of Valletta, each tied to a specific langue of the Knights Hospitaller.
