| 正面描述 | The obverse features a stylized geometric composition divided diagonally: the left half displays a stepped, checkerboard-pattern motif in relief against a dark field, evoking an ancient mosaic or architectural ornament, while the right half bears a series of concentric arcs radiating outward. At center right, the Greek state arms — a cross quartered on a shield, encircled by a laurel wreath — appear within a roundel. The denomination '50 ΕΥΡΩ' is inscribed in the upper field, and the circular legend 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ' (Hellenic Republic) surrounds the central emblem. |

Part of the Bank of Greece's long-running "Ancient Greek Cities" series, this miniature gold issue commemorates Messene — the fortified city founded by Epaminondas of Thebes in 369 BC following the Theban defeat of Sparta at Leuctra. The founding ended nearly three centuries of Messenian helotage under Spartan domination, making the city itself a political act as much as an urban one.
At one gram, these issues are struck for collectors rather than any practical monetary function, with mintages kept deliberately low across the series.
