L'Équipe was founded in 1946 from the ashes of L'Auto, the pre-war cycling paper shut down at the Liberation for collaboration with the German occupation. The football coverage that made the paper's reputation came largely through its role organizing and promoting the early European Cup — it was L'Équipe journalists, specifically Gabriel Hanot and Jacques Ferran, who lobbied UEFA into creating the competition in 1955.
