Reverse description The coin represents the place of the euro after 10 years of circulation in the euro zone. In the center of the coin is represented the Earth with the face value `50 Euro`. All around the planet are represented by different symbols of economic actors: the European Central Bank by the ECB headquarters, ecology and energy by the wind turbines, industries by the factory, cities by the houses, European citizens by the characters and trade by the boat. The inscription `10 YEARS OF THE EURO` is present on the upper part of the coin and the anniversary dates `2002` `2012` appear above the Earth. The design is similar to the common commemorative 2-euro coins and was chosen from among five designs pre-selected by the citizens and residents of the European Union, who voted online. It is the work of Helmut Andexlinger, a professional designer at the Austrian Mint. His initials `A.H.` are present under the representation of the ECB headquarters.

Additional information

Historical Context: Issued by France in 2012, this 50 Euro gold coin commemorates "10 Years of Euros Cash," marking a significant decade since the physical introduction of euro banknotes and coins on January 1, 2002. This period falls within France's Fifth Republic, under the presidencies of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande, reflecting France's steadfast commitment to European integration and monetary union. The coin underscores the successful transition from national currencies, like the French Franc, to a unified European currency amidst a challenging global economic climate, symbolizing stability and collective identity within the Eurozone.

Artistry: The design, characteristic of modern Monnaie de Paris issues, employs a contemporary and symbolic aesthetic. While a specific individual engraver is not widely credited on the coin itself for KM#1891, the style aligns with the Monnaie de Paris's high standards for commemorative coinage, often featuring clean lines and allegorical representations. The obverse typically depicts a stylized "€" symbol encircled by stars, representing the European Union, often superimposed over a map or globe, emphasizing unity. The reverse features the denomination, year, and mint marks. Signatures are usually represented by the mint mark (cornucopia) and the chief engraver's privy mark.

Technical/Grading: Struck in .920 fine gold with a weight of 8.45 grams and a diameter of 22 mm, this type is prone to handling marks due to its precious metal composition. For optimal grading, particular attention should be paid to the highest points of the design. On the obverse, these include the raised edges of the stylized "€" symbol and the tips of the stars. On the reverse, the high points of any allegorical figures or the details within the numerical "50" are critical. The fields, especially if issued in Proof or Brilliant Uncirculated, should be pristine, free from hairlines, bag marks, or toning that would detract from its original luster.
