Additional information

Billroth was not merely a celebrated surgeon — he performed the first successful gastric resection in 1881 and the first laryngectomy in 1873, procedures so technically demanding that contemporaries genuinely doubted they were possible. He was also an accomplished amateur musician and close friend of Brahms, who regularly premiered chamber works in Billroth's Vienna apartment before public performance.

Austria's gold collector series has consistently used the .986 fineness specification rather than the more common .900 or .999 standards, a deliberate house choice by the Münze Österreich dating back to their earlier collector issues.
