This coin commemorates the series of mass civic demonstrations that swept Lithuania between 1988 and 1990, culminating in the restoration of independence on March 11, 1990 — the first Soviet republic to formally declare it. The movement was organized primarily through Sąjūdis, the reform movement founded in June 1988, which mobilized hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians before Soviet authorities had any framework to suppress it legally.
The most dramatic episode was the Baltic Way of August 23, 1989, when an estimated two million people formed a human chain spanning all three Baltic states across roughly 675 kilometers.
