Reverse description The reverse presents conjoined busts in right-facing profile of King D. João I of Portugal and his consort Philippa of Lancaster (Filipa de Lencastre), both crowned and richly attired in medieval regalia. A fully rigged Portuguese galleon sails in the background at right against a stylized sea. The curved legend AS MÃES DA EUROPA arcs across the upper field, FILIPA DE LENCASTRE appears along the lower rim, and D. JOÃO I DE PORTUGAL is inscribed in the central field to the right of the busts. The mint mark INCM appears within the design.
