Philippe ascended to the Belgian throne in July 2013 following the abdication of his father Albert II — the first abdication of a Belgian monarch in the country's history. Coins bearing his effigy entered circulation in 2014, making this the first series to depict him as reigning king. Belgium's phased coinage transitions typically lag a new reign by months; the euro cent series for Philippe was no exception, with older Albert II-obverse pieces remaining legal tender alongside the new type.
