Belgium's euro coinage underwent a portrait update in 2002 when Albert II's effigy was revised, producing what collectors classify as the "2nd type" — distinct from the first portrait used at the euro's 2001 launch. The "1st map" designation refers to the pre-2007 European map design used across the eurozone's common reverse, which excluded EU member states east of Germany and omitted overseas territories; it was replaced across all participating mints beginning in 2007.
