| Obverse description | The national arms of Malta occupy the central field, featuring a traditional Maltese shield. The country name MALTA appears to the left of the arms, while the date of issue is positioned to the right. The legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA arcs around the design. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the entire composition along the outer rim, rendered in relief against the coin's edge. |

Malta joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008, ending the Maltese lira after nearly four decades. The transition was managed without a dual-circulation period — lira ceased to be legal tender the same day euro coins entered circulation, an unusually clean cutover that the Central Bank executed by pre-loading ATMs and retail cash points in the final hours of 2007.
The "2nd map" designation refers to the revised EU map design introduced across all eurozone 50-cent coins from 2007 onward, reflecting the enlargement to include newer member states.
