| Obverse description | The obverse features the celebrated gilded bronze Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, repositioned by Michelangelo on the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, set against the distinctive twelve-pointed rosette pavement of the piazza. The monogram of the Italian Republic (RI) appears to the right of the statue, while the mint mark 'R' for the Rome Mint is placed at the upper left. The date is inscribed in the lower field, and the design is encircled by the twelve stars of the European Union arranged along the rim. |
