This issue commemorates the 75th anniversary of Åland's autonomous status, formalized in 1922 after a protracted dispute between Finland and Sweden that was ultimately resolved by the League of Nations — one of that body's earliest and more successful arbitrations. The islands' Swedish-speaking population had overwhelmingly favored union with Sweden, but sovereignty was granted to Finland on the condition that Åland remain demilitarized and culturally autonomous.
Finland's commemorative fifty-euro silver program of the 1990s carried face values far exceeding bullion worth, effectively making each issue a collector piece from the point of release.
