The FAI World Air Games debuted in Turkey in 1997, the first multi-discipline air sports competition sanctioned by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale — an organization founded in Paris in 1905 that remains the sole governing body for record ratification in aviation and astronautics. Finland's participation as a commemorative issuer reflects the country's strong gliding tradition; Finnish pilots had accumulated FAI world records in Nordic conditions dating back decades. The mintage was low even by Finnish commemorative standards, making survivors in original condition genuinely difficult to source.
