The "Senhor das Areias" was a type of traditional Cape Verdean sailing vessel used for inter-island trade, part of a broader maritime culture that sustained the archipelago's economy for centuries despite chronic water scarcity and periodic famine. By 1994, these working boats had largely disappeared from active use, making this issue something of a farewell documentation in metal. The Banco de Cabo Verde series honoring traditional craft was one of the few circulating coinage programs of the period to prioritize indigenous maritime heritage over colonial-era imagery.
