Issued during the first years of Pinochet's military government, this denomination was part of a currency system already doomed before these coins left the dies. Inflation in Chile ran above 300% in 1974 — the highest in the world that year — rendering the 50 Escudo essentially worthless within months of issue. The entire Escudo series was abolished in 1975 when the Peso was reintroduced at a conversion rate of 1,000 Escudos to 1 new Peso.
