Banco Nacional Ultramarino's 50 Escudos of 1944 was issued for Portuguese Guinea, one of several West African territories the BNU served as a colonial note-issuing bank — a role it held well into the independence era. Bradbury Wilkinson printed the series in London, as they did for much of the BNU's colonial portfolio during this period, producing work of consistent technical quality for circulation conditions that were rarely gentle.
Foxing and humidity damage are the predominant condition problems with surviving examples, a predictable consequence of West African storage and use.
