Struck to mark the 75th birthday of King Sobhuza II, who by 1975 had already reigned for over five decades — longer than virtually any other monarch alive at the time. He had ascended the Swazi throne in 1921 and would continue to rule until his death in 1982, making his total reign of just over 60 years one of the longest verified in recorded history. Three years before this coin was struck, he had suspended the constitution and dissolved parliament, ruling thereafter by decree.
