Eswatini's hybrid polymer-paper substrate notes arrived with the 2018 series as the kingdom moved away from pure cotton paper — a quiet but significant infrastructure decision for a central bank serving a population under 1.2 million. G+D's hybrid construction offers improved durability over conventional paper without requiring the full plate and equipment conversion that an all-polymer run demands, a practical compromise for lower-volume issuers.

Rijkenberg's signature as Governor dates this note to his appointment in 2016, the first non-Swazi national to hold the position.
