The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic issued this coin while simultaneously fighting what would become its final war. The 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, launched by Azerbaijan in September of that year, ended in a Russian-brokered ceasefire in November with Armenia conceding significant territorial losses — including Shusha, the cultural heart of the disputed region. The NKR ceased to exist as a functioning entity by September 2023, when the remaining Armenian population fled following a 24-hour Azerbaijani military offensive.
Coins issued by the NKR in 2020 carry an unintentional finality: this was among the last year of issue before the republic's collapse.
