背面描述 A three-quarter facing bust of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos is portrayed at centre, rendered in fine relief with flowing hair and period costume including a high collar and cravat. The commemorative legend ΕΤΟΣ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΥ ΣΟΛΩΜΟΥ curves along the upper periphery, flanking the bust on both sides. The birth year 1798 appears to the lower left of the effigy and the commemorative year 1998 to the lower right, marking the bicentenary of Solomos's birth. The engraver's initials are incuse in the lower right field.

附加信息

Dionysios Solomos, the Zakynthian poet who wrote the Hymn to Liberty in 1823, had his work adopted as the Greek national anthem in 1865 — yet he spent most of his adult life in Corfu writing almost exclusively in Italian, producing relatively little in the Greek he publicly championed. His appearance on circulating coinage was well-established before this issue, which entered production in the final years before Greece locked its exchange rate to the euro in preparation for accession. Drachma-denominated coins struck after 2000 were legal tender but saw negligible circulation.
