Liberia has no domestic gold refining capacity and outsources virtually all its commemorative bullion programs to private mints, primarily in Europe. These issues are legal tender in name only — Liberia's actual circulating currency is the Liberian dollar, and no $50 face value coin has ever seen a cash register in Monrovia.
The 2010 lunar issue falls within a wave of sub-Saharan African nation-branded bullion struck for the Asian collector market, where demand for .9999 fine gold lunar-themed pieces was substantial that year.
