The G4M — known to Allied aircrews as the "Betty" — was the bomber that carried Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on April 18, 1943, when American P-38s intercepted and shot down his aircraft over Bougainville following the successful decryption of his flight itinerary by U.S. Naval Intelligence. The mission, Operation Vengeance, eliminated Japan's most strategically capable naval commander.
The Marshall Islands issued dozens of these commemorative $50 silver rounds throughout the early 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little to do with monetary circulation and everything to do with the collector market.
