The de Havilland Mosquito was built primarily from birch plywood and balsa — a deliberate response to wartime aluminum shortages — and its wooden construction initially drew skepticism from Air Ministry officials who doubted its structural integrity at operational speeds. That skepticism evaporated quickly. By 1944 the Mosquito was the fastest operational aircraft in the RAF inventory, outrunning most German interceptors without a defensive armament.
The Marshall Islands issued dozens of these $50 commemoratives throughout the early 1990s, targeting the collector market directly rather than circulation.
