The Republic of the Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s through a licensing arrangement with the Bradford Exchange, producing legal tender coins that were marketed almost entirely as collectibles rather than circulating currency. This Hurricane series entry honors the Hawker Hurricane, which — despite being overshadowed in popular memory by the Spitfire — actually accounted for more Luftwaffe kills during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The irony is not lost on historians: the Marshall Islands themselves were a Japanese-occupied territory during the war these coins commemorate.
