The Marshall Islands sits at the geographic center of the Pacific War's final phase — Kwajalein and Enewetak were seized by American forces in early 1944 specifically to provide forward airfields capable of supporting B-29 operations against the Japanese home islands. The irony of a Marshallese commemorative honoring that aircraft is not subtle. By 1991, the RMI mint program had become a reliable revenue mechanism for the young republic, which gained sovereignty only in 1986 under the Compact of Free Association with the United States.
