Additional information

Belize gained independence from Britain on 21 September 1981, and this issue belongs to the inaugural set of gold coins struck to mark that transition. The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative gold issue of this period — most contemporary programs opted for .900 or .917 — likely a deliberate choice to keep the gold content affordable while still qualifying the pieces as gold coinage.

KM#66 was struck at the Franklin Mint, which held contracts with numerous newly independent nations during the 1970s and early 1980s for exactly this type of prestige issue.
